Cryptohopper is our beginner pick. Paper trading is free, docs cover 8 use cases, the UI avoids jargon. Start on Pioneer (free), test 2 weeks in paper mode, then move to Explorer at $24/month if you actually use it. Alternative: Coinrule, even better if you want a drag-and-drop builder with zero technical curve. Avoid 3Commas and HaasOnline as first pick : the learning curve is too steep.
A bot's security rests on four pillars: (1) non-custodial design (the bot doesn't hold your funds, it trades via your exchange API keys), (2) limited API permissions (never withdraw permission), (3) clean breach history and fast incident response, (4) enforced 2FA and available IP whitelisting. Bitsgap (security score 80) and Coinrule (82) carry the cleanest records. 3Commas suffered an API leak in 2022 (~100k keys compromised) but has hardened security since: annual external audit, mandatory whitelisting, enforced 2FA. Pionex (62) loses points on the lack of public external audits.
Compliance is our 16% criterion, the second heaviest in the grid. As of April 23, 2026: Pionex remains on the French AMF blacklist since March 2023 for illegal investment service exercise. No official removal is recorded in the AMF bulletin at the date of this review. 3Commas and Bitsgap are Estonia-based, under Estonian VASP jurisdiction, aligning with MiCA (extended to crypto-asset service providers since July 2024). Cryptohopper, Netherlands-based, is supervised by the DNB. Coinrule, UK-based, is FCA-registered for its crypto activities. None of these bots is PSAN-registered in France, but MiCA may enable an EU regularization via CASP status in 2026-2027.
Bitsgap dominates grid trading with a strategy score of 80 and solid backtesting (85/100). Pionex follows closely with Infinity Grid and Leveraged Grid, but compliance risk limits EU usage. 3Commas offers a decent grid (88 strategies) but Pro pricing ($37) remains competitive versus Bitsgap Basic's $29.
If you ignore compliance, Pionex (16 built-in bots, 0.05% exchange fees) dominates the free segment. If you insist on legality, Cryptohopper's free Pioneer tier allows unlimited paper trading without a credit card, enough to test 8 major strategies before going paid. Exchanges also integrate native bots: Binance Strategy Trading, OKX Grid Bot, Bitget Strategy Plaza. Variable quality but clean native intégration.
We opened an account on each platform, set up at least one grid or DCA strategy on BTC/USDT, measured 12-month backtests on 2024-2025 data with realistic fees + slippage, documented API permissions requested, tested chat support on 2 technical questions (median response time). Compliance scores come from official regulator sites (AMF, FCA, SEC EDGAR, DNB, MiCA registry) consulted between April 15 and April 22, 2026. Last reviewed: 2026-04-23.
Our 2026 recommendation is simple. If you're starting out, launch Cryptohopper in free paper trading for 2 weeks. For advanced grid, Bitsgap. For the simplest no-code, Coinrule. If you're an experienced trader mastering API permissions, 3Commas remains the multi-strategy référence. Pionex offers the best feature/price ratio but demands an informed decision versus AMF status. Always test in paper trading before committing real capital.
Cryptohopper ranks first at 82/100, followed by Bitsgap (80), Coinrule (79), 3Commas (78), and Pionex (63). Ranking depends on your profile, see section above.
From $0 (Pionex, Cryptohopper free tier) to $450 (Coinrule Pro). SaaS market average sits between $29 and $79/month.
A bot doesn't create yield, it executes a strategy. Profitability is conditional: quality strategy, favorable market conditions, contained fees. Mandatory backtest before real déploiement.
Not banned from use, but AMF-blacklisted since March 2023 for illegal service exercise. Informed usage, MiCA may regularize via CASP in 2026-2027.
No bot managing stocks/forex here. We exclusively cover crypto bots acting via API on crypto exchanges.
